People found a moment in Wicked where Ariana Grande breaks character and it’s hilarious
She can never escape the pop star she is
Wicked has changed lives for all musical theatre fans, and if you knew Ariana Grande as the pop star she is, you may have been extremely surprised to see her hold her own in a musical. She actually comes from Broadway, but most of her career has found her fame as a pop singer. She killed it as Glinda, but people have noticed a tiny part of Wicked where she breaks out of her good witch character and gives major pop star energy.
Before she had even auditioned for Wicked, or actually, before Wicked had even become a musical, Ariana Grande was already in vocal lessons re-training herself to be a musical singer and getting into character. She also was ready to cancel the tour she was on to be in daily rehearsals just for her audition – she hadn’t got the part yet.
“The prospect of auditioning came across my desk way before Jon Chu was even attached to the project… I said, if this is happening now, we have to figure it out. We’ve got to pull the plug on this tour. I’m going home. I’m getting in voice lessons, I’m getting in acting lessons, and I’m going to turn this s**t out. If this is happening now, I’m going home and I’m training,” she explained on the Sentimental Men podcast.
With that being said, people on TikTok have found a little snippet of that pop star voice coming out in Popular, Ariana’s most famous song in the film.

People have noticed how in a small part of Popular, Ariana’s voice becomes more breathy and she does a little riff which reminds her fans of her normal singing voice.

Another said: “She did her iconic jaw thing in What Is This Feeling’ too 😭😭.”
Someone else wished she’s been a bit more iconically Ariana: “I feel like she should’ve added a little yuh in these songs to spice it up tbh.”
She has shown off just how dynamic her vocal range is to go from a pop princess to a musical theatre star, and I’m surprised there weren’t more appearances of her iconic vocal riffs that she sings in her own music. She really is the most Glinda Glinda that ever Glinda’d.
