Ranking the UK Wicked premiere looks from burn the witch to truly magical
Grab the firewood, I’ve found some Wicked fashion fails
Monday night saw the stars of Wicked come together for the UK premiere at The Royal Festival Hall, with the likes of Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey strutting their stuff on the green carpet.
In just a few day’s time, the world will be gifted the long-awaited arrival of Wicked, an iconic musical adapted to the screen by director Jon M. Chu. Months of Wicked marketing schemes already have us on the edge of our seats, a feeling that has only intensified since the start of the film’s press rounds.
Though last night’s premier bore the glitz and glamour you’d expect from the citizens of Emerald City, there were clear winners and losers at least where the fashion is concerned.
1. Cynthia Erivo: Truly magical
Leading lady Cynthia Erivo, who plays Elphaba in the flick, stunned in a Schiaparelli Haute Couture black ruffled dress with dazzling pink rhinestone detailing.
Though influencers invited to the event said the dress code was green and pink, Cynthia’s outfit was an obvious nod to her character’s signature black dress. You could even argue that shouted out her boyfriend Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) with the pink Tin Man-esque lining.
2. Ariana Grande: Burn the Witch
Ariana rarely misses when it comes to her fashion choices, but I can’t help but wonder about the world of possibilities she overlooked for what looks like an elaborate prom dress. Ariana paired the look with sunglasses and a diamond choker, proving her Wicked knowledge.
Granted, the Ralph Lauren dress was gorgeous and paid tribute to Glinda’s own yellow dress and sunglasses combination, but that fact was missed by many people online. It’s not bad, it’s simply meh.

3. Jeff Goldblum: Truly magical
Like a fine wine, Jeff Goldblum has gotten better with age, and the same could also be said of his fashion choices. He often features on various Hollywood best-dressed lists.
Though I’ll admit that the monochromatic suit was a little lacklustre, especially compared to his other suited and booted outfits, the true star of the show was his coat. With the luxurious fur trim, dark sunglasses, and styled hair, you could really see the Wizard donning the outfit for a day of shopping in the Emerald City.
4. Jonathan Bailey: Burn the Witch
There’s a running joke that men give up when it comes to red carpets, and though Jonathan Bailey is not usually included in that statement, his Wicked premiere look has been seen time and time again.
You can’t go wrong with a white double-breasted tuxedo, but that isn’t to say it’s right either.
5. Michelle Yeoh: Truly magical
Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh opted for an unconventional silhouette as she donned a custom Bottega Veneta gown that flashed her shoulders for the photographers. She kept with the theme of the evening, combining numerous shades of green in artistic panelling that worked in unison with the mixed textures.
If you squint, you’ll see her brandishing green and pink bracelets on opposite wrists. I see you, Michelle Yeoh.
6. Ethan Slater: Burn the Witch
Though some may argue that it’s impossible to look bad when your girlfriend is Ariana Grande, Ethan Slater proved the exact opposite as he walked the green carpet in a black suit.
Considering how dashing he looked in a velvet green suit at the American premiere, I can’t help but wonder what went wrong. Did he forget he was going to be photographed? Was there a tear-away moment he forgot to reveal? It’s anyone’s best guess.
7. Drag Race UK stars: Truly Magical
If there’s one group of people you’d expect to kill the Wicked theme it’s the ladies or RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. They did not disappoint. Recent victor Tia Kofi stepped out in a Glinda-inspired ensemble with heavy pink tulle while The Vivienne took a different route in what looked to be a tribute to Madame Morrible.
8. Olly Alexander: Burn the Witch
In yet another example of why you shouldn’t trust the process, Olly Alexander appeared at the UK premiere of Wicked in what can only be described as a Bridgeton-style straight jacket.
It’s giving haunted Victorian doll, sorry Olly.
9. Layton Williams: Truly Magical
Call me a hypocrite if you will because while Layton Williams’ look doesn’t technically meet the theme, the angular cuts and multiple layers exude that Sci-Fi meets Fantasy aesthetic that Wicked is known for. When you combine his killer posing, dark makeup, and statement earrings, it truly looks like Layton could be the Wizard’s fabulous enforcer.
