Mattel issues apology after ‘misprint’ on Wicked dolls packaging led buyers to porn site

Right, so there’s no doubt the promotional merchandise for Wicked has been extreme in some cases with themed Mac and Cheese, Crocs and even suitcases all being used to help promote the film. However, the newly officially licensed Wicked dolls by Mattel have come under fire after buyers revealed a link on the back of the box actually led to a porn site. Yes, seriously.

How this error managed to make it past anyone is truly beyond me, but one user on X pointed out the awful mistake, writing: “LMAO Universal Pictures put the wrong website for @wickedmovie on the back of their dolls for kids. It leads to a p0rn website.”


The link on the back of the doll’s packaging was supposed to lead to the official Wicked film website, however, it actually led those who typed it to an adult porn website, a huge error that Mattel “deeply regrets.”

When searched the link takes those to a website that displays the following message: “The following website, including all webpages, links, images and videos, displays sexually oriented, including explicit, material of a pornographic nature.”

In a statement, Mattel wrote, “Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls, primarily sold in the U.S., which intended to direct consumers to the official WickedMovie.com landing page. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this.”

Mattel continued: “Parents are advised that the misprinted, incorrect website is not appropriate for children. Consumers who already have the product are advised to discard the product packaging or obscure the link and may contact Mattel Customer Service for further information.”


So far it seems the Mattel Wicked doll line is the only one that has been affected, as both the Lego Wicked merchandise and Betty Crocker mix both have the correct link to the actual film website on the back instead of the link to the porn website.

X users have also pointed out hat some retailers such as Universal Orlando have put large barcode stickers over the website link, however, this is assumed to be a temporary measure as the dolls are now being recalled.
