Forget the Valentine’s Day gift listicles, most of us would settle for a nice card

Save your money, fellas. If you’re feeling hesitant about buying that CVS teddy bear or whatever last minute gift you picked off of a listicle for your S.O., odds are you haven’t quite hit the nail on the head with your Valentine’s Day present.

Likely their internal reaction to your last minute gift idea– although I’m sure they”d appreciate the thought

Never fear. Here’s your foolproof alternative: sit down, grab a pen and write a card. No, one from Hallmark with your name scrawled across the bottom doesn’t count. We’re talking a full-on, hand-written letter on un-crumpled paper that, god forbid, actually explains in detail how you feel about your significant other. Noah wrote Allie 365 times, you can manage this one day. Don’t pretend like you don’t know what I’m talking about.

Seriously, unless your partner only cares about the material stuff in life (in which case, you should probably bail now), this is one gift  you should feel totally confident in. The fact you actually decided to put your feelings on paper will be a game changer in your relationship—vulnerability is attractive AF. After all, what we want out of this holiday is to know you care, which doesn’t actually take money to prove.

Plus, writing a real card takes a little more time than swinging by a store or clicking ‘buy now’ on Amazon Prime. The fact you undoubtedly put some thought and effort and perhaps an hour or so into creating something for that special someone is invaluable. They will treasure it forever.

Choosing to make your S.O. a card also eliminates multiple risk factors that can come with purchasing a gift, such as forgetting the existence of a childhood fear of stuffed animals or accidentally picking out candy they’re deathly allergic to/disgusted by.

If you’ve known each other for ages and you therefore know exactly what to get them, definitely go with that instinct. However, you could always kick it all up a notch by including—you guessed it—a super sweet, sentimental card.

So, keep it simple this Valentine’s Day. Write your date a good old-fashioned love letter—or ‘like’ letter, if you guys aren’t there yet—to show them just how much you care.
