We asked Yalies how safe they feel walking home at night

The Morse/Stiles walkway is creepy

Every Yalie who reads Chief Ronnell Higgins’ recurring emails, or even national news for that matter, knows New Haven can be sketchy.

For those who missed it, a man’s limbs were found scattered across various locations appallingly close to campus this summer. For those who had read the news, sorry to bring back the nightmares.

The crime rate in New Haven is high, and some students feel the insular protection of the Yale bubble more strongly than others. Here’s what a few Yale students had to say about how safe they feel when walking home at night.

“I live in Saybrook so generally I feel totally fine. I wouldn’t feel safe walking home from East Rock, which I’ve done before—yeah, that doesn’t feel good.” -Levi Gray, senior

“I feel 100% safe. I’ve never felt unsafe, and I’m saying this as a senior. I live on Chapel Street, but then again maybe you should talk to people who live on Edgewood or Linwood or places farther away from Old campus and they might have a different story.” –Mo Katkhuda, senior

“Pretty unsafe. There’s a lot of crime in New Haven, especially at night.” -Eli Feldman, senior

“At midnight I wouldn’t feel super safe, but right now (8:30 pm) I feel alright. I feel pretty safe generally.” -Nathan Murphy and Sen Huang, freshmen

“The farthest I ever go is Stiles and occasionally I’ve felt a little like ‘I’d rather not be here right now’ but I’ve never seen someone coming down the street and been like ‘oh god, gotta get away!'” -Connor Wood, freshman

“Walking to Morse or Stiles is more sketchy than the average walk. If it’s late at night and I’m by myself I go down Broadway instead of the creepy walkway.” -Michelle Lapadula, sophomore

“I actually just took an Uber back home from Stop and Shop. I guess walking there was a little intimidating. I was walking with two guys so I felt somewhat protected, but they also preferred to take an Uber back.” –Sarah Pak, freshman

“I’ve never really felt in danger, except once on the New Haven green.” -Jordan Schroeder, senior
