Everything to do in Madison before summer ends

How is it already August?

When the realization that it is now August struck on Monday morning, people across the country had a simultaneous meltdown. With only a few weeks left of summer, checking off all of your summer bucket list adventures seems relatively impossible.

Worry not, though, my Madison friends because I have put together a list of everything that you should try before summer comes to a close. Whether you’re planning a day trip to the zoo or a weekend camping trip, check off your bucket list with these fun suggestions.

Go to a Mallards game

Support your local baseball team at a Madison Mallard’s game. Pay a bit more and receive unlimited food and drinks with your ticket.

Hike at Devil’s Lake and Pewits Nest

Check out Devil’s Doorway or just enjoy an ice cream cone on the beach at Devil’s Lake. To get your hiking fix in on a hotter day, check out Pewits Nest in Baraboo, Wisconsin. Explore a riverbed, try cliff jumping and slide down a waterfall at this hidden gem.

Do banjoga at Sunset

Yes, I said banjoga. Enjoy a free yoga lesson at James Madison Park while enjoying musical accompaniment from a banjo. Bring along your roommates (like me) to get a taste of the yogi lifestyle.

Go to open mic night at the Terrace

On Wednesday nights, Madison’s best and worst musical performers flock to the Terrace for open mic night. Looking to perform? Get there before 8pm to sign up for the stage.

Drink your money’s worth at bottomless mimosas

Brunch just got a lot more fun. Head to Delux or Madison’s for an all-you-can-drink breakfast experience. Try their Parmesan cheese and truffle cream breakfast potatoes to complement your mimosas.

Have a picnic at concerts on the Square

Throw your picnic blanket, a bottle of wine and your favorite cheeses into a picnic basket, and enjoy a free concert on the lawn surrounding Madison’s Capitol. Pro Tip: Lay your blanket down early to reserve a prime spot.

Go to the Henry Vilas Zoo

Spend the afternoon wandering around the Henry Vilas Zoo, located within walking distance of most of UW-Madison’s housing. Be sure to stop by the polar bear exhibit, the zoo’s newest attraction.

Float down the Sugar River

If lying in an inner tube while boozing sounds like a good time to you, the Sugar River is definitely for you. Be sure to pack snacks, sun block and a lot of beer.

See a show at the Overture

Check out one of the Overture’s many shows, concerts and plays. If you’re a student at UW, use the Student Rush deal to get a cheaper price on tickets.

Campout at Governor Dodge State Park

This bucket list item will take a bit longer to plan, but spending a weekend in the woods will ensure some awesome memories. Don’t forget to pack your s’mores supplies!
