The best up and coming apps on campus

Because you need something to procrastinate with

Social media is all the rage these days. With continuous technological developments, more and more apps are created to increase convenience and communication. To gain publicity, app developers have created campus ambassador programs, in which college students are responsible for promoting their products. Many of these programs have been established at UW, as students are devoutly working to spread the word. Here a bunch of up-and-coming apps to look out for on campus.

With

With is an app that focuses on bringing the “social back to social media” through a network that is up to date and relevant. It serves as a place for people to showcase their current socializations to the world in an unrefined fashion. The social circles created are made up of the people you are physically with, adding elements of reality and proximity.

As a campus ambassador for the app With, I am capable of posting to a social medium while being fully present and living in the moment. I try to promote With by constantly forming groups with the friends I am physically with, creating a space for photos and commentary to be posted.

Backflash

Backflash is a social media app that allows the user to take a video and send it to a custom date and time. You cannot access the video until the date you selected arrives. It is essentially a virtual time capsule.

Campus Ambassador Pauline Mossanen tries to encourage people to use the app by sending them Backflashes of funny situations to a later date in time. That way when people eventually open the video, they will not only see how cool the app is first hand, but also continue sending more videos to friends.

Bumble

Bubble is a dating app with a classic swipe-right/left interface, but when you match with someone the guy cannot message the girl unless she does so first. This filters out all of the creepy messages you would receive on other dating apps and allows for girls to contact whomever they feel would actually be most compatible with them.

As a campus rep, Sophie Kaldenhoven participates in a bunch of challenges to get the word out across campus. She recently ran a contest sponsored by Bumble with all the Greek organizations on campus where the winning team received a bar tab to the Kollege Klub on whatever day they wanted!

Webbing

Webbing is an app that acts as a giant social networking system for users. It helps you connect with people on your campus based on whatever category you so choose from. For example, if you were studying abroad and wanted to find a good restaurant, you would click on the UW tab, then abroad, then food, and then be able to see what people from your school at your location have posted about food.

Cami Polanski Skypes with the inventor, Avraham Orbach, who is based in Israel at least once a week to discuss recruiting and the progress of the application. As a campus ambassador, Cami publicizes Webbing by sending out emails, generating flyers, and engaging in online sharing.

Eat Street

Eat Street is an online food delivery app that allows you to type in your location and view lists of local restaurants that deliver to you. It’s beneficial in that it has a wide range of options you might not find around the corner and also frequently features promotions and coupons, which are great for college students.

On certain “promotion weeks,” campus ambassador Dara Zeltt passes out snacks, cups, hats, t-shirts, and other Eat Street accessories to get the apps name out on campus. She additionally does a lot of work posting on Facebook, twitter, and Instagram during events.

Firefly

Firefly is a new social media app that’s already been rated #1 new app by iTunes. It resembles a firefly in the sense that you can turn your “light” on and off which is your location. You can make status updates from those locations and share with your friends and nearby users.

As an ambassador, Avery Allen convinces her close friends and outer networks to download the app while also marketing Firefly alongside her other team members.
