There’s a pro-life demonstration on Bascom Hill

Three thousand flags represent the number of abortions taking place every day

If you’ve walked by Bascom Hill today, you probably noticed that the lower third of Bascom Hill has been decorated with flags.

At 7:15 this morning students started setting up 3,000 flags on Bascom Hill to represent the number of abortions which take place in America every day.

Students for Life Madison, a chapter of Students for Life of America (SFLA), is a pro-life student organization aimed at educating students on the harmful effects of abortion for both mother and child, and one way they do this is through the Cemetery of the Innocent demonstration.

“Students for Life is continuing its annual tradition… The Cemetery of the Innocent is set up to memorialize the 3,000 children lost to abortion each day in the United States,” said current vice president Sarah McQuade.

Around the flags, signs have been put up which say “Women deserve better than abortion” and a quote from Dr. Seuss, “A person’s a person no matter how small.”

The organization claims the goal of the Cemetery of the Innocent is not just to spread awareness of the number of abortions performed every day, but to connect with students and provide resources for those facing an unwanted pregnancy or struggling with the effects of an abortion. “I hope that we are able to draw attention to the resources available to women who feel pressured to have an abortion, as well as the women who are suffering from anxiety after having an abortion,” Sarah continued.

The demonstration will continue on Bascom Hill today from 8am-2:30pm and members of Students for Life Madison will be there to answer questions and provide resources to anyone who wants more information. James Kollross, the organization’s president for the 2016-17 school year, is excited to participate in the Cemetery of the Innocent “because it will give everybody who walks up and down Bascom Hill a visual of how many abortions take place every day in America.”
