Presidential candidate, Gov. John Kasich assured Madison residents he is the only candidate who can beat Hillary Clinton in a general election Monday evening at the Sheraton Hotel.

Kasich spoke about foreign relations, balancing the budget, bipartisanship and education. He took time to answer questions from the audience, and promised he will fight for the people.

“My town is a blue collar town where if the wind blew the wrong way people found themselves out of work,” Kasich said. “I’ve been in politics a long time and from the time I’ve got in until today my fighting has been for those folks, for the people I grew up with. I’ve fought the establishment for my lifetime.”

Kasich said he will fight for small businesses, blue collar folk and the safety of the nation. He is extremely concerned about the current lack of involvement in public affairs.

According to Kasich, it is necessary to create a coalition and fight against the radical jihadists in a united matter. He said these terrorist acts have gone to far and they need to be stopped

“There are times when we have to act, these people are intent on destroying our way of life,” Kasich said. “We have to destroy them, in the air and on the ground.”

Kasich made it clear he does not believe in his opponents’ stances on policing or eliminating Muslim communities. Kasich said it is important to work together with the Muslim community and not isolate them.

Kasich also mentioned his disdain for the personal attacks occurring during the campaign.

“This is not the time to play around or play politics, or by the way the time for attacking each other personally, Kasich said. “It’s time for grown up leadership. It’s time for someone who knows how to fix this.”

Kasich believes he can fix America’s problems. When he became governor of Ohio the state was down 350,000 jobs and now they are up over 400,000.

Kasich said he has an immense amount of experience writing budgets, and he warned students that if the debt continues to rise their chances of getting a job after college decrease.

Tuition is an important topic to many voters and Kasich said he believes the cost of college is completely out of control, but he does not believe free tuition is the way to accomplish controlling the cost. Kasich warned students of the consequences of too much government involvement.

“I think our young people need to know if you pile on all the rules and regulations and the taxes you’re reducing opportunity.” Kasich said.

Many people had doubts about the legitimacy of his campaign, but Kasich quickly combatted their attacks. He said it is important for voters to think about who can win in the fall and he is the only one who is beating Hillary Clinton in the polls.

Kasich said he believes he can convince the delegates he is the best candidate. The delegates are people who have spent a lot of time working in the republican party said Kasich.

“I think there is a possibility of convincing people who can win and who can serve,” Kasich said. “That’s why I stay, and why I’m going to continue to work as hard as I can in all this.”

The speech ended on a personal note. Kasich encouraged the audience to dream big and discover their destiny.

“Find your purpose because you were made to do something special.” Kasich said.
