A recap from this weekend’s Spring football game

Cheer on the SOTOGAB

On Saturday, Wake Forest Football held their annual Spring game at BB&T Field on Saturday.

The team was divided into two teams Team Black and Team Gold, which was decided by the team captains for the game, Kendall Hinton and Ty Hayworth (Team Gold) and John Wolford and Marquel Lee (Team Black).

Even though here was no tailgate and the attendance was small, the school spirit was still there with the the help of the cheer team and the SOTOGAB – Spirit of the Old Gold and Black.

The Tab was able to meet up a with a few of the players following the Saturday game, including Steven Claude and Rocky Reid, to discuss their thoughts on it.

It was a sunny, but cold and windy Saturday afternoon for some football. Many of the spectators there were bundled up in blankets to protect themselves from the bone-chilling wind. It definitely was not ideal weather for a spring game, and not the usual weather for a football game, as the general attire for a football game is sundresses for the girls, and a polo or button down with khakis, for the boys.

The players benefit from the spring game because it gives them the opportunity to showcase their skills prior to the start of the fall season. It is especially beneficial to the freshman who might have redshirted last season and the newly enrolled freshman who will be a part of the class of 2020. This is the perfect opportunity to gain that experience and show off what they have been working on during the off season.

“We look a lot better from last season, but we still have stuff we need to work on. However, we are stronger, faster and smarter than we were last season,” Reid, the team’s running back, commented.

Claude, wide receiver, added:  “It feels like we are clicking as a team, on both sides of the ball [offensively and defensively].”

Over 100 Wake Forest football alumni were honored during halftime, such as Riley Skinner. Skinner helped lead the team to win the 2006 ACC Championship game.

The success of the spring game gives high-hopes for the upcoming season and it should be something everyone should starting looking forward to.  On the topic of the 2016 season approaching, Claude said: “I’m looking forward to the season as a whole because we have been working hard and can’t wait to show it.

“We still have more to work on, as do every team but we are going to continue to grind during the summer and throughout the fall to make sure those things we have to work on become less and less.”

The first game of the 2016 season will kick-off at home versus Tulane on September 1st at BB&T Field.

And, most importantly, Go Deacs!
