Evans after 34-3 UNC: ‘We’re tired of hearing about everybody else’

4-1 baby

The Hokies blew past No. 17 North Carolina 34-3 on Saturday to improve their record to 4-1.  Despite heavy rain and seven fumbles, Virginia Tech dominated their ACC rival through aggressive defense and a consistent running game.

While his stats weren’t impressive, Jerod Evans took care of the football and led his team to another big win.  His 49 yards on the ground and two touchdowns through the air were enough to pull away from the Tar Heels.

After the game, Evans didn’t mince words about his team’s success.

“We’re tired of hearing about everybody else,” Evans said.  “We’re tired of hearing about UNC, Miami, Clemson, Louisville.  We feel like we should be mentioned with those guys.”

Experts may not be ready to put Tech up there with Clemson and Louisville just yet, but the Hokies certainly made their case on Saturday.  Bud Foster’s defense held North Carolina’s offense to just 58 passing yards and forced four turnovers.  UNC’s offense failed to score a touchdown for the first time under fifth-year head coach Larry Fedora.

“We knew this team was picked to win our division,” Foster said.  “It’s a great step for us, towards where we’re wanting to go.”

Head coach Justin Fuente praised his team after the victory, calling it a “pretty darn fantastic performance.”

With their win over UNC and Miami’s loss to Florida State, Virginia Tech is now atop of the Coastal Division.  The Hokies will travel to Syracuse next weekend to take on the Orange.
