I went to an engineering class as a communications major

It’s as bad as everyone says

There’s no doubt that engineering is one of the hardest majors at Tech. After my recent trespass into an engineering class, I can personally attest to that fact.

My major is multimedia journalism in the communications department. Now, most people say that communications is one of the easiest majors (we actually don’t write as many essays as you’d think), but I like to believe that we’re a smart group of people that can understand other subjects.

After attending the engineering class, I realized this was not the case. At least not for me.

I went to an introductory Green Engineering class last week, and it was honestly the most horrible class I’ve ever attended. Being that it was an intro course, I figured I would know at least a little of what the professor was talking about.

I didn’t.

The class started and he began talking about precipitation and I thought to myself “all right, man I’m with you, I learned this in elementary school.” Then he said the word “’infiltration” and I was lost.

He went on and on about this infiltration thing and said something about hydrology and showed a bunch of graphs on the 100-foot-tall screen. That’s when I zoned out.

I started thinking about what’s for dinner at Fire Grill and looking at all the other students. Some were listening, some were on their phones, and a few had headphones in watching Netflix. But no-one looked as confused as me. Even if they weren’t paying attention, they would occasionally look up and nod in understanding. I shook my head in utter confusion at the equations on the screen.

Finally, after 30 minutes, I had enough and left. No one noticed my departure as there was 300 people in the class. I didn’t want to leave so prematurely, but I was so tired. My brain hurt from trying to understand the material for five minutes and from trying to understand the teacher’s accent.

I have no idea how these 300 students bring themselves to that class every week. On a Friday, no less. And I have absolutely no idea how they find the strength to stay in that major. I felt like the dumbest person at Tech when I left the class and vowed never to try to understand the subject again.

More power to you engineers, because I surely couldn’t do it.
