The do’s and don’ts of going out downtown

Don’t spend your last $10 on a Rail… or do

T.O.T.S. Tuesday, Turnt Thursdays, Freak Fridays, Game Days – there’s always a reason to turn up in Blacksburg. I mean, what else are we going to do in the mountains other than study and look at cows? We probably have one of the best bar scenes in the college world, and most of Tech’s population (21 and over of course) takes advantage of it.

After you’ve been downtown a few times, you learn the ropes fairly quickly, but if you’re new to the turnt life, follow these few rules.

What to do:

Pregame at home

The drink prices are outrageous. It’s like the bar owners know that we’re broke college kids who will spent their last $10 on a Rail. Save your money and drink at home. You’ll get better alcohol at a cheaper price.

Go with your squad

No one likes going downtown alone and if you do, I’m sorry, it’s a little weird. Not to mention unsafe. Campus sexual assault and attacks are a real thing. Always travel in packs when you go out.

Bring a stash

Caution: only do this if you are able to do it stealthy. Carry some airplane bottles with you and use them in the bathroom. You won’t believe the amount of money you’ll save.

Accept free drinks

But only if you watch the bartender make them. Don’t just take a drink that a random guy hands to you. There’s nothing wrong with being a little friendly to get a free drink. And guys, girls will buy you free drinks too if you know how to talk to them.

But definitely don’t:

Fall asleep. Anywhere.

That’s the easiest way to get kicked out. I know that after a few drinks the tables at Hokie House start to look really comfortable, but refrain giving into the tiredness and rally.

Wear heels

Girls (and fabulous boys), save yourself the trouble and wear flats. Especially if you plan on getting lit. Stumbling in heels is also a reason to stopped by the police who like to hang out in front of T.O.T.S.

Drive

Ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER. Don’t you dare think about driving home, it doesn’t matter how close you live. Either walk (if you’re with people), get a designated driver, or use this magical thing called Uber. Ubers may be a little expensive late at night, but you know what’s really expensive? A DUI.

So now that you know what to do and what not to do, you can “do downtown” successfully.
