Free self-defense classes to be offered by UVA police

Be there October 3rd, 6th and 10th

The University Police Department will be holding free self defense classes on October 3rd, 6th and 10th from 5:30-6:30pm. The class will be open to ages 15 and up, and attendance at all three classes is mandatory.

The course is called R.A.D. – Rape Aggression Defense System. It is designed as a comprehensive course for women that teaches them awareness, prevention, risk reduction and avoidance while also teaching hand-to-hand defense training.

As a woman who has felt uncomfortable walking around Charlottesville at night, I am glad to see there is a free and accessible self defense class offered for women.

In light of this good news, there are also ways that a program like this can improve. Fourth Year Morgan Hale said, “I feel like they are providing a great opportunity for the community, however, only having three classes that are mandatory limits the amount of people who can participate.”
