My hometown Houston is better than yours and Beyonce agrees

H-Town, Clutch City, Space City, Bayou City, The H, Screwston

The United States has so many amazing places to live but the BEST place to live (and I’m quoting Beyonce on this one) is HOUSTON, TEXAS BABY.

If you’re my friend you know that I almost never stop talking about Texas, and that seems to be a common thing for most Texans. But to add to my love for the Lone Star State, I happen to come from the best city too.

Houston, Texas is the fourth largest city in America and people are flocking to the H like they are giving away free Rockets tickets or something and I’ll tell you why.

There is ALWAYS something to do

When I moved to Charlottesville my friends didn’t understand why I was always itching to go somewhere new and why I couldn’t just stay in and have a great time. In Houston you can always find something going on and most cool events are F R E E. Those are golden words to hear for every broke college kid and young adult.

The weather

I was born and raised in Houston and the one Christmas my family spent somewhere else we spent it in Central America which was even hotter. When I saw snow falling for the first time last year I was overwhelmed. It was like rain, but not. I didn’t know how badly my ears could hurt from the cold and I almost froze my hands off because I didn’t have waterproof gloves for snowball fights.

In Houston the winters never last longer than a couple of weeks. By the end of February you could potentially be back outside tanning. Sure, we have hurricanes every once in awhile but as a true Houstonian you know that no matter what the H will survive.

THE FOOD

In case you think I’m biased, the New York Times called Houston one of the most exciting places to eat… You should be sold. Not only is the food spectacular but it is full of ethnic diversity. The Tex-Mex is authentic, not like the queso that tastes like plastic which most people eat here in Cville.

There’s Cajun, Thai, Honduran, food-truck food and so much more. If you’re up for something interesting try the Hobbit Cafe. If you want to be the classic Texan try our version of Cookout, it’s called Whataburger and it’s way better (Sorry, Cookout).

After 11PM order a “hubchub” to experience magic.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

YEEHAW. OK, so I know what you’re thinking: this is a get together just for the thousands of rednecks there are in Houston, but I promise that it’s not. The Rodeo is a month full of concerts, fun carnival rides and fried oreos. I’ve seen gems such as Hilary Duff, Luke Bryan, Pitbull, Bruno Mars, Jason Aldean, Justin Bieber and so many more at the Rodeo.

At the rodeo you’ll get to see a fantastic event called the Calf Scramble which involves 25 high school students in the FFA program trying to catch 20 loose calves in the arena. It’s so sad but hilarious to watch.

You’ll also get to see “Mutton Bustin'” which is where small children get to ride sheep until they fall off (they wear helmets, it’s fine) and the kid who holds on the longest wins a belt buckle! Yall, this is the real deal.

Yeehaw y’all.

Houston is important and important people are born and raised here

Pop-Quiz! What was the first word ever transmitted to the moon? That’s right, HOUSTON! “Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.” Clutch City is so important that it was given the honor of being the first thing said from space.

As for important people, let me name drop a few: Beyonce, Beyonce and BEYONCE. Bey is from Houston and she isn’t shy to make references about Texas or Bayou City in her songs.

Other important people include but are not limited to: Hilary Duff, Jim Parsons, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Garner, and Patrick Swayze.

This is what beauty looks like.

So do yourself a favor and get to Houston as fast as you can. I’ll be there in 22 days, but who’s counting?
