Regardless of football – here’s why we’re way better than UNC

Coach London might fail us on the field, but we win at everything else

UVA and UNC go head-to-head this Saturday, for the 120th time – making it the oldest Southern rivalry in the country.

While our football team might not be as reliable as we would hope, let’s remind ourselves why we are the superior southern state school…

The Corner

Enough said. Chapel Hill is nothing compared to the variety the corner has to offer (Bodos and dumplings?!). Not to mention that it’s walking distance from grounds.

Food

Does Chapel Hill have a higher restaurant per capita than New York City? Didn’t think so. It’s safe to say we have Tarheels soundly defeated in the food department.

The Good Ol’ Song

These few simple verses have the power to bring together all members of the Wahoo community no matter when or where they are sung.

Student diversity

Despite being a public state school, UVA doesn’t seem like it’s overflowing with Virginians. OK, yes, every fourth person you meet is likely to be from NoVA (hadn’t even heard of this mystical land until my first day on Grounds), but UNC boasts a population of 82% in state, compared to our 2/3. That’s a loooot of Carolina if you ask me…

The Lawn

The Lawn > any quad UNC might have. While the sprawling fields of Chapel Hill are fine, there’s a certain rush one gets upon setting foot on the Lawn that can’t be put into words.

Perhaps it’s the feeling of knowing you’re surrounded by Jefferson’s architecture, carrying on his legacy of intelligence and excellence as a UVA student.

Our school colors

Carolina blue is pretty and all, but nothing stands out in a crowd like that good old Wahoo orange. UVA colors are simply louder and prouder.

Secret societies

While UNC has a few secret societies, we’re pretty sure they aren’t nearly as cool as the IMPs, the Zs, and especially not the Sevens.

We’re just Southern enough

UVA has some characteristics of southern schools—we dress up for football games, we eat Chick-fil-A, and when someone says “y’all” we don’t look at them like they’re foreign—yet it is not overwhelmingly southern either.

Girls don’t show up to their 9ams perfectly made up in cute sundresses every day (personally speaking, this is a huge relief). Greek life, though popular, is not a way of life.

Our mascot

What even is a Tarheel? Not to sound cavalier, but UVA’s mascot is way better. We have a man on a live horse. Come on.

All in all, there’s something about being a UVA student that even we can’t explain. It’s a combination of honor and integrity, school pride, intellect, and ability to have fun all at the same time, that make us unlike any other school.

So, win or lose on Saturday, we all know deep down that we’re at the best place we could possibly be.
