Third year medical student dies in car accident

By now, no one on Grounds wants to see Dean Groves’ name in their inbox

Third-year medical student Juliana Porter died in a car accident on Sunday night.

In an e-mail to students Dean Groves expressed his deepest condolences to students.

He wrote: “Juliana was a member of the School of Medicine’s Class of 2017 and hailed from Norfolk, Va.

“She attended Davidson College where she graduated with a degree in biology in 2012.

“While at Davidson, she was a varsity swimmer and an Academic All-Conference student athlete. She also volunteered extensively at the Health Reach Community Clinic.”

According to Dean Groves, on entering the medical school in 2012, Porter said in a personal statement, “I will approach this next step of my life with passion, hard work, and compassion.”

The 25-year-old is survived by her parents, brother, and her fiancé.

Porter was the third student to lose her life this semester, and the second due to an automobile accident.

Fourth-year Kurt Hilburger passed away last week due to injuries sustained in a car accident.
