What’s your best first year memory? We asked around grounds

Note to first years: hide clothes when streaking lawn

The first semester of college produces memories you will never forget.

And it also throws up moments you will not want to remember.

Can the incoming class learn something from UVA’s upperclassmen? We went out to the Lawn to ask some Wahoos about their first year memories.

Adam, third year

“This one time, I was streaking the lawn and had not hidden [my] clothes. I got back and all that was left was a baseball cap.”

Emily, fourth year

“My friend had a crush on an upperclassmen football player and we saw him out. He had no idea who we were but we acted like we could set them up. So we got them to dance and ever since then he’s remembered me, but probably as the awkward first year who came up to him and asked him to dance with their friend.”

Alec, second year

“I walked into a classroom for my first class of my first year of my first semester. Then the teacher came in and handed out the syllabus and I realized I was in the wrong class. I didn’t want to say anything because the teacher had already started the icebreaker and all that. So I sat in that class for 75 minutes and at the end I left and never showed up again.”

Vandre, fourth year and Ashley, fourth year

Ashley

“Spring semester, I joined a sorority and the girl I really bonded with most in the pledge class above me really wanted me to be her little. I really liked her too. On Boys Bid Night, which was still really close to the beginning of the semester, we were introducing ourselves as ‘big and little’ to everyone at the party and we just got into some crazy shenanigans. And we are big and little today!”

Vandre

“Joining First Year Players was one of these most influential and important experiences of my college career. It really shaped my friend group and my social circle and allowed me to really put myself out there as a college student, meet new people [and] try new things.”

Jenny, fourth year

“The most memorable thing for me was joining SHO, the Student Hip-Hop Organization.  I found the first organization that I really felt like I was a part of. When I went to that first interest meeting and just came in the room and was instantly like ‘OK, these are my people, I found my people, this is what I want to do.’”

Amirah, second year

“I would basically just recommend to join as many clubs as possible. I joined fencing club and rugby club. I mean, I didn’t stick to them but it was just worth the try and the experience.”
