Just because I’m undecided doesn’t mean I’m lacking ambition

Not knowing where you’re going in life isn’t as bad as it seems

What’s your major?

A question that becomes part of your life when you are a college student. It all starts when applying to colleges, but little did I know that this question would follow me around everywhere I went from that point on; during recruitment, during in-class icebreakers, when meeting the people in your dorm, and how could we forget about the inevitable bombardment at every single family event.

Just about every single person you engage in small talk with will ultimately ask you, “So, whats your major?”

It becomes as natural as asking someone’s name. This might not wreak the same amount of havoc and stress on a person who is completely certain of their life’s direction.

Those kids who have known they wanted to be a doctor ever since they went to their dad’s office for “bring your child to work day.” However, for us undecided kids, being asked our major is a whole other torture in itself.

Not sure how these are helping me decide my major, but I’ll go with it

At least I thought so. Whenever I used to be asked what my major was I would always feel a sense of frustration come over me.  It’s difficult to not know where you’re going in life when it seems like everyone else has got it all figured out.

Once an Uber driver asked me my major and as I replied with a polite, “Oh I’m undecided at the moment,” he was quick to respond “Oh undecided at USC, I’m sure your parents love that.”

It makes you constantly question yourself, your ambition, and your life path. There is often a negative connotation with the word ‘undecided’.

However, I have slowly realized now that this is not something to be ashamed of at all. I have learned to embrace my ambiguity. I have grown to appreciate the fact that I have not rushed into any hasty life decisions. I’m undecided, and that’s okay.

Dornsife 4 life am I right?

There are so many amazing things to do in this world, who says that I have to know exactly what job I want to have at the age of 18? I can barely put on matching socks in the morning. Not to mention the fact that I have minimum experience or knowledge in these fields and what they actually entail in the real world. I’m here to tell everyone that being intellectually curious about a lot of things, having broad interests, and being unsure of where life is going to take you this early on is not a bad thing.

In fact, it’s an advantage. Focusing on a specific major can sometimes act as blinders for your work and block out other interests, passions and areas of study that might otherwise become something important to you. Being undecided is all about discovery and recognizing who you are as a person through taking classes that you actually want to take and want to learn more about, not just because they are required by a narrow major that you’re not even completely sure about. Whether you’re undecided or you’ve changed your major 5 times already, uncertainty is not a bad thing. Only through uncertainty and exploration do you truly grow as a person.

Although it can be frustrating at some times, the opportunities of being undecided are endless and there is something out there for everyone. So for now I’ll stick to taking those general education classes and anything else that proves interesting to me until my calling in life beckons me to do exactly what I was meant to do on this earth.

And no, my parents do not resent me for being Undecided, but thanks uber driver
