Why it’s so easy to hate Duke

We wear the better blue… and a million other reasons

As the UNC football team gears up to take on the dook Blue Devils tonight for the battle of the Victory Bell, it is the perfect time to remember why we hate d00k. Even though the greatest rivalry on Earth often peaks during the months of February and March, the tradition of the UNC vs. Duke football game dates back to 1888, when Duke was still known as Trinity College. Besides, anytime is a great time to list the reasons why UNC is a thousand times better than that other school.

We’re the nation’s first public university

And Duke isn’t. Public > Private. Everyday.

We wear the better blue

Classy, southern, classic. Those are just a few of the words you can use to describe our school colors. Carolina blue and white complement each other so well and with the occasional black or navy, you can never go wrong. Literally our colors go with everything. But Duke’s royal blue and white is so bleh that it makes you want to cringe every time you see it.

Rameses is lit

We might be known as the Tar Heels, but everyone knows that our favorite mascot is Rameses the Ram. Rameses is chill AF and just wants to see our boys kick ass in Kenan. You know what a Blue Devil does? Wreak havoc. And for no good reason, which is not chill at all. Whoever thought having a blue devil as a mascot was a good idea was obviously wrong.

Our athletic program has a lot of rings

UNC athletic teams have won 42 national championships combined. Duke only has 16. I guess they don’t call us the ‘University of National Champions’ for nothing.

We’re the current ACC Coastal Champs

Our football team is currently the defending champs of the ACC Coastal division, which makes us a 1000x better than Duke at Football. The last time Duke won the Coastal division was in 2013.

Chapel hill is actually a college town

Durham might be great and all, but Chapel Hill is where it’s at. The beauty of attending Chapel Hill is that we’re nestled in a town that appreciates a hipster coffee shop and good food (Sutton’s chicken and waffle bites are to die for). There’s just enough traffic to put everyone on edge when trying to find a parking spot but somehow still manages to feel like a quiet little town.

The sky is Carolina blue

Most importantly, the sky above us is that perfect shade of blue and thank god it’ll never be a shade of royal blue. Ever.

So Heels, get ready cheer our boys on to another victory and GTHD.
