The importance of fall break

It’s only two weekdays but it’s so worth it

As much as we all love Chapel Hill, every once in a while we need a break from all of the chaos. After all, UNC isn’t easy and “midterm week” seems to last for months on end. The endless amount of due dates that pop up in October are enough to make anyone want to curl up in bed, foregoing any and all responsibilities.

That’s why fall break is so important. Although its only two full weekdays, the break gives us just enough time to step away from the hectic college schedule and relax. By relax, I mean binge-watch shows on Netflix and cuddle with dogs.

If you go home for break, you may end up answering questions from your parents who care about what’s happening in your academic life. Talking about your classes while on break might be slightly frustrating, but its also nice when someone who cares about you is able to offer some much-needed words of encouragement.

Break is also a good time to get in some home-cooked meals and some much needed sleep in a bed that doesn’t move every time you turn over – shout out to the twin XL dorm beds that get us through those afternoon naps.

Even if you’re unable to go home during break, being able to put coursework on the back burner for a few days is a win in itself. If you stay on campus, you may be able to explore some of what Chapel Hill and surrounding areas have to offer or at least get a cool pic at the Chapel Hill mural behind He’s Not, which is definitely on everyone’s bucket list. The absence of people on campus might even cause you to miss the regular commotion of people rushing through the pit.

The end of fall break is sad, as we’re reminded that class readings and group projects still exist. At the same time, we’ve all realized how much we’ve actually missed Chapel Hill and have new bursts of excitement to be back on campus.

So Tar Heels, although midterm season is upon us, know that you’ve got this. Know that there’s a light at the end of this very dark tunnel. Fall break is only a few days away.
