The wealthiest people of UMass

And Chancellor Swamy isn’t even on it

One of the perks we never really talk about at a public university is the ability to look up salaries, budgets, pensions, etc., because anyone working at UMass is a state employee – it’s all public knowledge.

However, most of us are too busy working, studying and trying to make end’s meet every month to see how the one percent is doing these days.

Welcome to MassOpenBooks, a site created by the Pioneer Institute. This think tank based in Boston is not attached to the university and focuses on education reform along with other issues related to public policy.

For more information on their mission, check it out here.

You can also look up this information on the Boston Herald, which reports the same highest-paid state employees as noted in MassOpenBooks.

Of course, the top two salaries are coaches from UMass Athletics – what a surprise.

Derek Kellogg’s unfathomable salary of over one million dollars in 2014 is the equivalent of 45 UMass Amherst in-state students attending the university before receiving any financial aid.

Notice how there is only one woman on this list, and after some googling it’s obvious that almost all of these employees are white – including the one woman.

Chancellor Subbaswamy (a person of color) just misses the cut, as he is the 11th highest-paid person at UMass with a mere income of $432,614:

As students and families are struggling to afford an education, privileged Massholes like Robert L. Caret (our former President hangin’ out below) are profiting off of their Boston Harbor condominiums. I hope the University of Maryland enjoys the newest WASP on their team!

Maybe this isn’t actually news to anyone – a bunch of white people make the most money on campus – but to the average college student who has student loans, it’s interesting to see where the money is actually going.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
