We stood in the longest line ever for free ice cream from Ben and Jerry’s

They served around 800 patrons on Free Cone Day

Ben and Jerry’s held their annual Free Cone Day this Tuesday in an effort to give back to the Athens community.

From 12-8pm lines of students, faculty and Athens residents rounded the block waiting for their free scoops. The shop estimated they gave out around 800 cones throughout the course of the day.

Plenty of students didn’t mind waiting in line to get their free ice cream cones.

Chloe Copilevitz was one of the 12 Ben and Jerry’s employees working the event. She said the employees of Ben and Jerry’s have been preparing for this event for a long time by “creating the world’s biggest schedule.” In between directing the line of people and encouraging students to post pictures on social media, she said she was super excited about the event.

“It’s a corporation that loves to give back to everyone in the community.”

Ben and Jerry’s employees handed out stickers and coupons to people waiting in line.

The wait was a little long at times, but the true ice cream fanatics didn’t mind braving the line.

One such fanatic, Abbey Clear, said: “I love ice cream. I grew up eating a bowl every night. So when I heard about the event on Facebook, I couldn’t resist going to get some.”

Abbey said she missed the event last year and would’t let that happen again this year. She got in line right after her two exams.

Sawyer Wilson and friends enjoyed their scoops of ice cream after waiting in line for 20 minutes.

Sawyer Wilson said she want to come to free cone day because “she is a college kid and free stuff is great,” but that it’s particularly special because Ben and Jerry’s is her favorite kind of ice cream.

Sawyer said: “I like to be downtown and the atmosphere of downtown, so being able to come here after class and getting free ice cream is great.”
