Even when I’m away, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island holds a piece of my heart

You have not lived until you’ve tried one of our eggers

Long Island, New York – what a place. Whether you are making fun of our accents, questioning our use of “on” vs. “in,”  or devouring our (unreal) pizza and bagels, it’s safe to say Long Island is always talked about. Long Island has plenty of little towns tucked away into nooks and crannies that often go undiscovered. My hometown Cold Spring Harbor (CSH or The Harbor for short) is the ultimate gem, and here is why.

You cannot beat our location

You are an easy 45-minute drive to NYC on a good day. Emphasis on a good day, because those almost never happen on Long Island – thank you to the insane amount of unnecessary traffic.

I also think it is completely necessary for everyone to experience the Long Island Railroad at least once in their life – there is truly nothing like it.

We have views for days

The quaint little town of CSH sits right on the North Shore of Long Island, so you are constantly surrounded by the most breathtaking view in the world. Having lived in this beautiful town almost my entire live, I am guilty of taking this view for granted as almost anyone would with habituation. But, I always remember how lucky I am that I am able to drive by this every day.

Nobody loves Billy Joel like us

We live and breathe Billy Joel here in The Harbor. We have a park named after him, and he tends to dock his Downeaster Alexa here from time to time. We still freak out when we spot him around town, no matter how many times we have seen him. He has an album named after Cold Spring Harbor – I think that says it all.

There is simply no beating our food

You have not lived until you have tried a bacon, egg, and cheese (or an egger) on Long Island. The Cold Spring Harbor Deli, right in the heart of our town, makes these amazing sandwiches. When people come home from college even for just the weekend or on a long break, everyone would turn down a home cooked meal in a heartbeat for one of these babies – that’s just how good they are.

Pro tip: Add hash browns to your bacon, egg, and cheese. Wow, life changing.

While bacon, egg, and cheese’s are pretty much a staple for all of Long Island, there are also a few food places that can only be found in CSH, Sweetie Pie’s is one of them. Sweetie’s (for short) is the most adorable coffee place in my opinion. This is always my go to place to catch up with friends and just feel at home.

The trails are gorgeous

This might be one of the most difficult work outs you will ever experience. The first time I went walking (or at least what I thought was just walking) on the trails, I had no idea what I was in for. I was gasping for air and I honestly thought that my friends and I were lost and were going to have to survive in the woods for three weeks. People don’t come to our trials from all over for no reason. We are the real deal.

It’s always hard for me to leave The Harbor when I go back to school: there really is no place like home. But, I know The Harbor will always be here for me, waiting with open arms.
