What’s with this new glitter trend at UConn?

One time I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and glitter. So I bought army pants and glitter

Ok ladies listen up, the time has come to channel your inner Ke$ha and all her glittery glory. The sparkly pop princess, known for her over the top style has transformed this childhood crafting staple into the ultimate fashion statement.  The glitter trend is on fire right now gracing runways, magazine covers, and red carpet events. From glittered hair to eyes, sparkles are guaranteed to grab that special someone’s attention at any bar or party in 2016.  Keep in mind though, a little glitter goes a long way, and by a long way I mean, overkill can likely occur. It’s safe to say once you start to shimmer like Britney Spears “Toxic” crystal body suit circa 2004, you’ll know enough is enough.

That being said, I’m no professional photographer, but here’s a glimpse at how a dash of sparkle can take your look from dull to dazzling in a few simple steps.

Go get yourself some glitter

“Sorry, we’re out of glitter” are words you’re likely to never here when on the hunt for glitter. Even though these tiny reflective particles are all the rage in the fashion and beauty world right now, most drug or craft stores in your area will likely carry a variety of colors and sizes for an inexpensive price. I actually picked up these beauties at a local drug store on clearance for  around $2.00. So get ready you’re glitter obsession is about to begin.

For your hair

Rainbow colored hair is a thing of the past. This shimmery trend has the internet and Instagram feeds buzzing.  If you haven’t witnessed some girl rocking this do yet, you are , as Kayne would say, “Bound 2” during 2016. Although Kim K has yet to add any fuel to this fire hot hair trend, singer Miley Cyrus has been photographed killing the glittered root scene. Easy and fun, it’s the cutest way to hide those grown out dark roots without breaking your bank at the salon. I recently spent sometime trying out this new fad with  friends and I have to say it…I’m literally obsessed. To be honest this might not be the most practical look for my life, but If your down to razzle dazzle once in a while or even 24/7 this a must try for you.  Application is easy, simply combine glitter with a clear hair gel and massage into your hair. To keep your sparkles firmly in place I would recommend finishing with hairspray.

For your nails

Sometimes less glitter is more, especially in terms of manicure styles. It’s time to shed that last season Essie color and give yourself the ultimate nail makeover. Glitter nails are so in. Easy and super cute, this is by far the best way to incorporate glitter into your everyday look. Adding a subtle touch of sparkle to your manicure routine is sure to have you staring at your hands all day. You can purchase a variety of glittery nail polishes at your local drug store for under $10.  Layering glittered nail polish over a solid colored polish is a must try its pretty and professional all in one.

For your whole body

Who wants to ink their whole body when they can glitter? This Ke$ha inspired look, will bring out the disco diva inside of you. If you feed of being those girls at the club or bar who have other girls staring in awe than this a look is definitely for you. I have found body glitter is best when worn on a night out , say to a bar, club, or house party.  I’m sure heading to class or work resembling a 1980’s disco ball probably won’t score you any points with you your professor or boss, unless he or she is a “Saturday Night Fever Fan”. So keep in mind that this dazzling look should only be worn to social events. Simplicity is a major key in every beauty routine, and all you need in order to achieve this jazzed up look is glitter from your local drug store or craft store and extra hold hairspray.

For your face

There’s no doubt that glitter has always played a huge role in the make-up industry. All you have to do is scroll through celebrity or make up bloggers Instagram accounts. Or better yet, think about the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, when Christina Aguilera made it cool to flash powder blue glittery lids.  That being said shimmering makeup is definitely a fashion statement. After testing out the glittered lid, I came to two conclusions, not bad, but not for me. Maybe I went a little over the top, but I was surprised when I looked in the mirror and saw the resemblance of  Lady Gaga singing the National Anthem at the 2016 Superbowl looking back at me. Don’t get me wrong, I love Gaga, but she’s for sure over the top and no one can pull off such dramatic looks like her. Thats I wouldn’t recommend incorporating that much glittered make-up into your daily routine, but if you’re in the mood to spice up your nighttime style this is the perfect way to easily do so. Even better, light sparkles lined under the lid actually worked well for me. For my over the top glitter eye look I  simply applied  Vaseline to the lid of my eye.  Using an eye shadow brush I layered on the glitter. For my less glittered look I applied a glittered liquid eye liner to the bottom of my eye, to add a subtle touch of sparkle to my look.  If you’re felling even more glitter inspired, glittered lips are a great way to amp up any outfit. Using a glossy lip color simple apply sparkles with a lip brush.

So there you have it. In the words of Tyra Banks “shine bright, shine far, don’t be shy, be a star.”
