A Berkeley English major analyzes the California Senate candidate statements

‘Try writing sober next time’

If you are a California resident, you probably received one of these voter information guides in the mail.

It includes voting instructions and information about Proposition 50, the legislative constitutional amendment.

But my favorite section of the voter guide is the list of twenty-one California candidate statements for the United States Senate. This is because most of the statements contain a gold mine of poor writing and grammatical errors that I, an unassuming nineteen-year-old college student, may critique and grade for my own entertainment.

Disclaimer: These grades are meant for the candidates’ writing, not their platforms or party affiliation. That being said, I implore you to make what you will of their intelligence and then vote accordingly on June 7th. A complete guide to the U.S. Senate Candidate Statements may be found here.
