The art of Bruffing

How to make the most of your swipes

To some it may seem self-explanatory, but for those Experienced Bruff goers, we know that Bruffing is a true art form. Meals in college are few and far between, so here is how you can get the most out of your Bruff experience.

How to reserve a table

Done.

Throw your phone on it. Your keys, your wallet, your backpack. It sounds astounding at first, but no one steals them. Respect the phone-saved seats – it’s an unspoken rule.

How to Bruff alone

First you must accept that it’s not weird to Bruff alone. It may seem like a daunting task, especially in the first few weeks of school if you are afraid of looking like a loner, but no one cares how you Bruff or who you Bruff with.

Pick a seat (the high tables are the best for solo Bruffs), throw your stuff down and Bruff away. If you really don’t want to run into anyone (which you should recognize is almost inevitable), pick a corner table facing the windows.

Breakfast Bruff is hard. On weekdays the omelet line closes at 10am – if you get there at 9:55am it’s almost always too late. The line will be backed up so be prepared to wait, but know that it is worth the wait. If you want a quicker omelet you can get one at the hamburger grill, but be prepared here to sacrifice quality for speed.

Depending on what time you get there, the cereal bar will likely be out of bowls (they keep smaller bowls at the yogurt, pasta, and soup stations). In absolute desperation it is acceptable to use water cups.

How to speed Bruff

Tap in. Take two stairs at a time. Grab a waffle cup. Fill the waffle cup with coffee. Use double cups if the coffee is too hot. Grab a banana. Grow an extra arm. Grab a muffin with your extra arm. Run to wherever you need to go. Do not spill coffee. Do not burn tongue. Un-grow extra arm.

How to Bruff Last Minute

Bruff closes at 10:00pm on weekdays, but be careful on weekends because it closes 8:00pm. And Bruff won’t wait up for you. If you’re the last one there they’ll let you take all the leftover fruit home, but it will most likely be melon and (if you’re really lucky) kiwi. They’ll turn the lights off and play music when it’s time for you to leave. Don’t be that annoying student who makes all the workers stay late. Just don’t.

How to Bruff hack

Follow Tulane Dining on YouTube for some excellent hacks, and remember that the most creative hacks come when you think to combine stations. My favorite hack is making milkshakes: from the ice cream bar add oreos or candy of choice, chocolate syrup, vanilla ice cream and then add some milk.

How to to-go Bruff

Technically there is a To-Go Bruff behind Bruff, where you get convenient little sandwiches packaged for you and some hot food. You aren’t allowed to take food out of actual Bruff, but if you bring in some ziplock baggies and aren’t pushing entire stations into your backpack, no one cares. I have seen kids get in trouble for putting bundles of bananas in their backpacks—not so subtle.

How to Make Sodexo Friends

Arie is a Bruff MVP.

Bruff workers are the friendliest, and they love to talk to students. Make conversations, learn their names, ask them how their days have been, listen to their stories, and say thank you. Always say thank you to the people who could potentially spit in your food, but don’t say thank you for that reason. Say thank you because Bruff staff is the best.
