Is there such a thing as too much makeup?

You do you boo

What even is too much makeup? Women are commonly criticized for wearing too much makeup by men who think we are “lying” to them about how we really look. They claim to prefer natural beauty over women wearing too much makeup.

Men: “When women wear makeup they’re basically lying to us.”

Women: “I don’t see why I’m being blamed for a man stupid enough to think I have sparkly gold eyelids. ”

To start, that is an opinion, and that opinion only matters if you want it to matter.

Makeup is an art form, you are playing with shade and light in various ways on your face to accentuate or conceal certain features. YOU ARE NOT PHYSICALLY CHANGING THE SHAPE OF YOUR FACE. Women aren’t “lying” when they wear makeup because it is still their individual face underneath. Some women wear makeup to hide imperfections, which is what makeup is there for and that is individuals right to do so.

Others wear makeup to express themselves, whether it be bright purple lipstick or fake eyelashes, makeup is an art form.

So what’s the big deal? Women are people, just like men. Men cut their hair to look different, women cut their hair to look different. Men can grow facial hair to look different, women can wear makeup to look different. For both men and women, we are doing things to alter our physical appearance in some way. So why then are only women being criticized for expressing themselves by putting on makeup when men grow beards to express themselves?

Not to mention, there are a vast majority of men who wear makeup also, including some of the most idolized men like Leo DiCaprio, Zac Effron, and honestly probably every and any actor you can imagine. Does that make them less manly? Why don’t they get criticized for it?

“Because it’s their job” or “they’re supposed to look different” is not a valid excuse because what if I told you Johnny Depp, Christiano Ronaldo, and Bret Michaels wear makeup on a daily basis, which is true. So now try and tell me there is an issue with an award-winning actor, a professional soccer player, and a country singer wearing makeup daily.

Men aren’t critized for wearing make up because they keep it a secret. If you are walking on a street in a bustling city I can guarantee you there is a vast majority of men who are wearing some form of makeup; moisturizer, concealer, aftershave, or eyeliner. The reason no one notices it is because these forms of makeup are not noticeable, but it is still makeup none the less. Even Christiano Ronaldo’s toe nail polish is still makeup, though not as noticeable. If the makeup is noticeable they are often criticized for other things than just for wearing makeup.

I have very strong opinions on the topic of makeup because I am a makeup addict myself, there I said it! I love makeup. I would marry it if I could.

I make my own YouTube videos, which are all makeup tutorials. I love expressing myself and playing with the features on my face through use of different colored eye shadows or by contouring my features to make them look more defined.

I do this for ME. I wear makeup because I enjoy it. I wear makeup because glitter makes me happy.

I don’t wear makeup because I feel like I need to and I certainly don’t wear makeup because I care about men’s opinions.

Before putting on makeup

After putting on makeup

Some people would say they like the picture on the top better, others would say the bottom. Everyone has their own opinion and every opinion is valid. But the only opinion that should matter to you is your own.

I like both pictures. On a day to day basis, I usually look like the top picture because ain’t nobody, or at least me, got time for makeup everyday. If I’m going out at night or I have time to put on makeup, you know I will put on all the makeup, sometimes borderline drag queen but that’s ok!

So is there a such thing as too much makeup? NO. NEVER. You can do whatever you want to your face or your body and no one has the right to tell you otherwise. But, if someone does have a problem with how much makeup you wear, do you really need that person in your life? Probably not.
