Why you should stay in Philly for the summer

Is your hometown really better than the city of brotherly love?

With only a few weeks left of the semester, summer is quickly approaching. It feels like we were just on spring break and now we are all planning for summer break.

Some students will go home, some will go abroad, and some may be staying right here in Philadelphia. Staying here might seem boring after having been here since August, but it might actually be a good choice.

Philadelphia is full of things to do. It’s a city, so of course there is never a day with nothing to do! It’s so important for all of us as students to immerse ourselves in the city that Temple is located in instead of going back home to what we are used to. It will just make it that much harder to get adjusted again to the city lifestyle when you come back in August.

Maybe it’s finally time to get out of your comfort zone and plan a summer in Philly, and here are some reasons why:

You can take a summer course

Although this sounds dreadful at first, it may be something to really think about. Maybe there is a really hard class you could get out of the way.  Or, sometimes during your regular semester you can get easily overwhelmed by classes, so being able to take less credits might help you out in the end. It could also put you on the track to graduating early.

You can get an internship

The clock is ticking and most internships are already taken for the summer, but with a little research there are still some you can apply for. It may not be your ideal internship, but it’s still something to add to your resumé to help you get a better one for next year.

You can get a job

There are a lot of jobs hiring for the summer because most college kids go home. Places on campus are hiring, as well as places in Center City. Summer is a great time to make some money for yourself!

You can stay and party

Not everyone will be here on campus, but there are a number of students staying. Avoid going back to your boring hometown and make it a summer to remember (or not remember).

You won’t risk wanting to kill your family members

Everyone knows that the first few minutes of seeing your family is always so exciting. But once a few hours go by, siblings start to get on your nerves again and you will be wishing you could get away from them.

You don’t have to deal with people from high school

For some people, friends from high school will always be their best friends. But others would rather never see them again. Avoid being forced to hang out with those annoying high school people by keeping your distance.

You can attend all the events happening in Philly

There are a number of events happening in Philadelphia this summer. Between Mad Decent Block Party, Philly food and music festivals and Philly Beer Week you’ll have plenty of events to keep you busy and having fun.

You can stay independent

Every time you go home, no matter how old you are, your parents always nag you about something. They’re either telling you you’re being way too lazy or giving you a list of chores to do. Don’t let yourself be bothered for just wanting to have a summer of fun for yourself and to be independent!

You won’t have to go months without seeing your friends

Leaving your college friends for the summer can be hard, so why not avoid that and live with them all summer long? This way you can still see them every single day, and you can go on adventures together. As mentioned above, there will be plenty of Philly events to go to together over the next few months.
