What you need to know about Temple’s new shuttle service

It’s like Uber, but for students to get around campus

There’s a new on-demand shuttle service at Temple called “Flight,” which picks up students from their locations and takes them to campus.

The service, named by Andrew Moliski from Temple Ad Club and Student Body President Ryan Rinaldi, is set to launch March 14th, 2016.

The program was originally pitched through Ryan in his platform while running for student government to create a greater presence of transportation for students on campus. Ryan said the service was an idea “collaborated between Temple’s student government and the transportation department here at Temple, [specifically] Mark Gottlieb, the Facilities Superintendent.”

It was inspired by the “high volume of students that live off campus [who] need to get back to campus to use university services.”

We sat down with Ryan to learn about the new shuttle service. To use it, students just have to download an app called “TapRide.”

This is the app used for the new service

Once downloaded, a list of schools using that services will come up. After selecting “Temple University,” simply click “Flight” and request a ride. The application will notify the student when the shuttle is at the location, just like an Uber or Lyft would. The parameters of the service will run the same as that of the existing service area, “[including] all important points in the immediate vicinity of Main Campus from 5th Street to 20th Street and Cumberland to Girard.”

The running times will also be the same as that of Temple’s TUr Door service from 5:30 p.m. to 6 a.m. Unlike before, when the primary drop off location on campus was always TECH Center, the new service has a total of eight on campus drop-off locations:

  • TECH Center
  • Tyler School of Art
  • White Hall
  • Johnson and Hardwick Hall
  • Morgan Hall
  • Fox School of Business
  • Independence Blue Cross(IBC) Student Recreation Center
  • Student Center

The service will pick students up from any location on campus. As Ryan said, the service is “rooted in making sure students get to and from campus safely late at night” and is free of charge.
