How clean is your favorite food spot?

So, Crown Fried Chicken has ‘evidence of insect activity.’ What did you expect?

How sanitary do you think Temple’s off-campus food hot spots are? Are you ever worried by rumors about what you’re eating? Well, this week, The Tab is taking a look at the conditions in which our food is prepared and served and see how exactly students react.

Using the Philadelphia Office of Food Protection we put together a list of hotspots for food around Temple’s main campus, then showed people on campus to see what they had to say.

When asked about his recent visit to Koja Grille near Morgan Hall, Temple freshman Ram Raloapali said he very much enjoyed his Jap Chae. Then he was shown some recent violations taken from the archive.

He said: “Koja Grille seems like a nice place so I’m more surprised to hear that it happened there than at a place like Crown Chicken, which I find to be less sanitary. It depends on the place, honestly. I wouldn’t think stuff like that happens all the time”

Although Ram’s reaction was fairly rational, others were more prone to extreme reactions about what they saw from the archives.

Freshman Michael Gangnath said: “That’s disgusting. If anyone there coughed in my food I would sue.”

Ram wasn’t too far off about Crown Fried Chicken’s sanitation standard. The Tab met with Temple junior Sasha Horn about food safety. We showed junior Sasha Horn their report.

“Oh my gosh! I couldn’t imagine how these places get by,” she said. “I work at a restaurant myself and our health inspector is so thorough with his work. It’s not surprising being that we live in a big city, but it still comes as a shock to me”

Jimmy Jonn’s – Philadelphia Office of Food Protection

When asked if he was surprised with the safety report from Jimmy John’s, freshman Noah Wise said: “I have been to other Jimmy John’s and they seemed relatively clean. But I’m not surprised about that [violations from the archives], health reports usually are very thorough with every detail.”

While Temple students continue to eat at places with questionable sanitation practices, the Philadelphia Office of Food Protection will continue to stand by the notion every detail does indeed count.
