Campaign launched to Save Princeton Sprint Football

The Friends of Princeton Sprint Football, a group consisting of alumni of the program, have written a petition requesting that sprint football be reinstated at Princeton.

The petition, addressed to President Eisgruber and Athletic Director Mollie Marcoux, claims Princeton’s decision to terminate the program is inconsistent with its motto of “Education through Athletics”.

It adds the administration’s decision “will deny current and future student-athletes the opportunity to benefit from varsity athletics, including those who were influenced to choose Princeton by that opportunity.”

The petition became available last night, and you can sign it here.

Princeton Sprint Football

We spoke to Co-Director of Save Princeton Sprint Football and 2014 alum John Wolfe, who told about the incredible support he has received for the campaign.

He said: “The support from alumni and students has been overwhelming. In particular we’ve been really thankful to the wrestling program, whose alums have given us really helpful insight about what it took to have their program reinstated after it was terminated in the 90s.

“Above all, the support has been aimed at those young players who were abruptly told they can’t play football anymore – we’ve got current players and incoming freshmen who chose Princeton over other Ivies in large part because they were promised they could play four years of football.

“The support has been paired with outrage in a lot of cases – alums don’t understand why the administration is still refusing to release the report that allegedly proves Sprint is less safe than other contact sports, and they want to know what Eisgruber is hiding.”

Full disclosure: I am a cornerback for Princeton Sprint Football.
