Women’s soccer is one game away from sweeping the Ivy League

Only Penn stands between them and perfection

The women’s soccer team has had an incredible season thus far, going 13-3 with only one game left to play in the year. They have already clinched the Ivy League title and an NCAA bid, but are looking to close out their unblemished conference schedule. They were recently ranked at #24 in the nation and have one of the strongest teams in the history of the program.

The Tigers 2-0 shutout over Cornell clinched the Ivy League title

They started the season strong with a 6-0 dismantling of Howard, then traveled to New York to beat Fordham. Their next three home games resulted in their only losses of the season, as the dropped one contest apiece to 22nd-ranked Rutgers, Dusquene and Delaware.  In those three games, the Tigers were outscored 7-2 and were shut out twice.

The Tigers bounced back from that rough patch to beat Villanova 3-1, then returned for another undefeated stretch of three home games.  They beat LaSalle 4-1, then beat William and Mary, ranked 23rd in the nation, in an overtime match.

Regardless of tomorrow’s outcome, Princeton will continue playing in the NCAA tournament

In their first their first Ivy League battle of the year, Princeton shut out Yale 3-0. From there, the Tigers ventured up to New Hampshire, and bested Dartmouth in nail-biter, winning 3-2 in overtime. They came home to beat Army before shutting out Brown 4-0.  They returned from Providence to beat Lehigh 2-0 in their last non-conference game.

On three consecutive Saturdays, the team beat Columbia 3-1, Harvard 2-1, and shut out Cornell 2-0.  They play their final match tomorrow at Penn, who sit at 6th in the Ivy League with a 1-2-3 record within the conference.

Princeton has clinched the top spot in the Ivy League and will be the Ivy League Champions for 2015.  As such, they will represent the League in the 2015 NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament.  The first round of the tournament will take place during the weekend of November 13-15, with the opponent yet to be announced.

Junior forward Tyler Lussi leads the Tigers in scoring with 13 goals and five assists

The Tigers have outscored their opponents 42-16 thus far on the season. They are led in scoring by junior Tyler Lussi, who has five assists to complement her 13 goals, and freshman Mimi Asom, who has 10 goals and four assists.  The multi-faceted Princeton offense has had 12 different players score over the course of the season.  Their winning streak of 11 games is second in the nation, behind only George Washington.  To beat Penn on Saturday would mark only the third time for the women’s soccer team to be unbeaten in League play in the history of the program.
