I’m not surprised Trump is our new president

I didn’t vote, but I didn’t have to

The saltiness on Pitt’s campus is real.

As many of you know, groups of Pitt students gathered to protest and speak against Trump’s big win in the early morning of November 9th. Many individuals are saddened and outraged about this event in history but I can honestly say I knew he was going to be elected.

As someone who did not vote, I was not highly involved with either Trump or Clinton’s campaign. That being said, I felt there were reasons to vote for both candidates. For anti- Trump voters across the country, that feeling of understanding is not mutual. They are asking the question, “Why the fuck did you vote for Donald Trump?”

He’s the face of a “traditional” America

Many Americans interpret Trump’s message as bringing back the glory days in terms of the economy, cultural/social issues, and our place in the world. He wants to bring the American Dream back.

He’s the change that many Americans have wanted for years

As many people know, Trump has no previous experience in politics compared to your usual suited up dude in Washington. People are tired of Washington’s political machine and want something new. They want a change, and that’s what Trump advocates for.

The first time he talked about hypothetically running for President was almost 10 years ago

He is a TV star and has done the most ridiculous things on public television to get everyone’s attention, and he got it. From Wrestle Mania to movies to The Apprentice, Trump has been selling himself to the American people far before many people realized what he was doing.

America runs on consumerism

Trump is a successful business man. No one can argue against that. As Americans, we are consumed by many businesses multiple times a day, whether we realize it or not. That being said, we can assume that Trump knows what he’s doing when he is campaigning his ideas on and off the screen. And it has worked. Many people want America to be run like a business in order to be a successful and independent nation.

I spoke to three young adults who are working class citizens and students and asked them why they voted for Trump. Here’s what they said:

“I voted for Trump because his foreign policies are centered around not getting used and taken advantage of internationally and focus more on domestic affairs instead,” one said.

“I voted for Trump because I could never vote for someone who I do not trust at all, and I do not trust Hillary Clinton,” said another.

“I voted for Trump because it’s time for a change in pace. We’ve had a never ending stream of life-long politicians in office and I don’t like where they’ve taken us. Hopefully a more business oriented mind will lead us in new directions.”

Are you starting to understand? Yes, he’s said some horrible, outrageous things but there are many Americans who disregarded that and researched what he is going to do for America. They believe he is what America needs.

Now for the anti- Trump supporters who are crying at home and scared for our country, that is completely understandable. There is a lot of crazy shit going on out there, but the issues that many individuals have tried to drown are floating right up to the surface.

These issues can finally be addressed by the people, something that has needed to happen for decades now. In addition to this, now is not the time to panic. Trump hasn’t done anything yet and I know the waiting period will be filled with anxiety but it will just get your underwear in a bunch.
