How to deal with stress in college

We all need a little help in this department

College is the ultimate breeding ground for stress. It happens to everyone, but there are varying levels. Right now, I am in a constant state of stress, and I doubt that will change any time soon. Between the amount of work I have for my classes and all of my activity obligations, I feel like I just don’t have time for anything. I doubt that I am the only one, either.

When I asked my roommate about her stress levels, all she could say was “It’s always somewhere between blind rage and sobbing. Right now it’s more towards the blind rage. The next person who messes with me is getting their nose broken”. She is deadly serious too. She does mixed martial arts and is crazy strong- the next person to stress her out is in trouble. But I think she’s right on par with almost everyone else I know.

Last week, I had multiple emotional break downs due to the anxiety and stress I had because of my work load. I could have handled it in different ways, but that was the only way I knew how. Completely breaking down did make me feel a lot better, but if that isn’t for you, here are some methods to help you cope.

Take a break

I know it is difficult to take time off when you feel like there isn’t time to do everything, but it’s important to take time for yourself. If you have to skip a class, skip a class. I guarantee you, if you tell a teacher you’re having a hard time, they will understand.

Speak to someone

Misery loves company so don’t be embarrassed to lean on someone emotionally. Everyone has some amount of stress, and it helps to talk it out. You don’t have to get emotional, it can be straightforward if that’s more your style.

Eat comfort food

It’s called comfort food for a reason, it’s satisfying and nostalgic. It may not be good for you, but if you need it, you need it. So buy that pack of Oreos and #Treatyoself. Sugar can also cause natural opioids to be released in your brain that induce feelings of euphoria.

Dance and sing to your favorite music

There’s nothing like getting your blood pumping and pretending you’re a super cool rock legend. It’s nice to live outside of yourself for a second and just fantasize. Being active, in a fun way can promote happiness and more of those natural lovely opioids in your brain.

Scream

It’s violent and angry and completely satisfying. If finding a place is hard for you, I recommend the Oakland CVS parking lot, the stairwell of Cathy after 9pm (great acoustics), into your pillow, the upper patio of the Pete, or in Towers Lobby so everyone can understand your discontent.

Breathe

It’s the most obvious, but one of the most effective and easy. If you’re having anxiety or stress, you can forget to breathe. Taking deep can help you calm down for a second and take back your life. Take a breath in for three counts, hold it for four, and breathe out for seven.

Laugh

If you’re stressed, just go find a good meme- laughter is the best medicine.
