Cheap and obvious things do in Pittsburgh this summer

Because sometimes Pittsburghers think too hard

You’re in Pittsburgh, but have nothing planned. It’s summertime, so you can’t go to a Steelers’ game and buy nosebleed seats. It’s hot out, and you don’t want to walk around all day in the burning in the sun. So what should you do in bridge town?

Go to Kennywood (Season passes are $94.99 to $139.00 and a single day ticket is $43.99)

For anybody with the need for speed and the desire to feel like a kid for the day, Kennywood is your best option. Less than 15 miles out from Downtown Pittsburgh sits this one-hundred and eighteen year old amusement park. Of all the fun things to do at Kennywood, it includes 6 rollercoasters and 3 water rides.

Go to a Pirates’ Game (Individual tickets start at $18 typically)

One of the up and coming teams of the MLB, the Pirates bring an excitement to every night at PNC Park. Even when the team is losing, it’s a great time because of the views of the city, food including Quaker Steak & Lube and Dippin’ Dots- it’s also super cheap price per ticket.

Go kayaking ($16 per hour for an individual kayak)

Located below PNC Park is Kayak Pittsburgh’s North Shore location. Even if you only kayak for one hour you’re getting your money’s worth. Besides getting active by paddling along the three rivers, you can also let your inner photographer come out by taking pictures along the ride.

Go ice skating (about $15 per person)

Within the twenty-mile radius of Downtown Pittsburgh, many skating rinks are available for those who don’t want to be outside but also want to be physically active. Some indoor ice rinks including Island Sports Center (west), Bladerunners (south) and UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex (north). While at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, you might even run into one of the Penguins doing summer workouts.

Go to Sandcastle (Season passes are $94.99 to $139.00 and a single day ticket is $32.99)

If all of the above fails and you literally don’t want to be inside or outside and hot, go to Sandcastle in Homestead. Sandcastle offers visitors 15 water rides and 67 acres to explore.

So Pittsburghers, I get it. You’re not ready for the summer heat and traffic from the airport and tunnels that comes along with it. You don’t want to spend money, but you have to realize that you have to eventually. Here’s my 6 suggestions for cheap and obvious things do in Pittsburgh during the summer to keep yourselves from stressing too much about work, the Steelers’ season to come, and how packed Primanti’s is.
