The hottest man buns on campus

All man buns are not created equal

Got a case of the Mondays? Look no further. We’re here to show you Penn State’s most notable man buns, which I’m sure is just what you need.

What I’ve found through my research is that not all man buns are the same. In fact, you can tell a lot about a guy by his style of man bun. For example, the man with the lived-in low bun is much more laid-back than the man with the shaved sides. And the burly man with the bun/beard combo would never hand the aux cord to the shiny-haired hipster with the slicked back top knot. You can’t just clump them all together like that, you know?

There’s no need to venture off to see an underground band play in Brooklyn to know what we’re talking about. I’ve seen a surprising amount of State College residents rocking the man bun – so I took it upon myself to ask them the questions we all truly want to know, like “How do you maintain your man bun?” and “How long did it take you to achieve that look?” Here’s what they had to say…

Zach Campbell, Senior

“Nice hair like this doesn’t happen by accident.”

Ian Fitzsimmons, Senior

“I don’t do anything too crazy. I shampoo and condition like 3 or 4 times a week. I also have leave in conditioner that I use whenever I shower.”

Gordon Rogusky

“I condition. You know.”

Penn Willow, Senior

“I had no idea what I was doing initially and didn’t really do anything different from when I had short hair for the longest time. But I realized I had to switch things up when I kept getting shampoo suggestions from girls. I started using decent shampoo, but still don’t condition it.”

Even without conditioner, this man bun gets the praise it deserves. He goes on to say:

“I get complimented on it all the time– like almost every time I meet new people. Whether the compliments are genuine or not, it’s a conversation starter at the very least– and often leads to the shampoo conversation.”

Joe Tombasco, Alum

“I grew it out for a Jesus costume about a year and a half ago.”

Dylan Tritschler, Senior

“I’ve always been a fan of the longer hair. Growing up, I was always growing out my hair. But it wasn’t until more recently I decided to grow it out the longest I have ever. I’m indifferent about the man bun– more so into just flowin’ my hair back. I don’t mind the style, except when dudes shave the sides of their heads with it. I throw it up in a bun when I want to keep my hair out of my face.”

Dylan goes on to explain the upkeep that comes along with having hair like his.

“I take pretty special care of maintaining my hair. The main goal for me is having silky, smooth hair. I achieve that by using Suave shampoo/conditioner mix.”

Whether you love them or hate them, man buns are very much a thing right now– as there are tons of Instagram accounts solely dedicated to featuring an eclectic range of buns that dudes are perfecting these days (@manbunmonday, @manbunsofdisneyland and @dailymanbun to name a few). Use them as a procrastination tools for finals if you wish.
