Top 3 Penn State v Maryland moments in history
A look back at the three biggest games the Nittany Lions and Terrapins faced off in
We can all agree that last Saturday’s blowout loss to the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes is one we want to completely forget about.
By now, most of you probably don’t even know what I’m talking about – kudos to you!
With our beloved Nittany Lions traveling to Baltimore this Saturday to take on the University of Maryland, let’s take a look back at the top-three moments between the Nittany Lions and the Terrapins.
# 3: ‘Battle of the Unbeatens’- Penn State 27 Maryland 3
1978
Let’s start this countdown out with a game that occurred back when our parents were young and reckless. The year was 1978, both teams were unbeaten and with a record crowd of 78,019, Beaver Stadium rocked as No. 2 Penn State put on a massacre of No. 5 Maryland. The Nittany Lions would become a “media darling” as they chased the national championship.
#2: Maryland’s 13-point comeback – Maryland 20 Penn State 19
2014
A history dominated primarily by the Nittany Lions, these two teams faced off for the first time since 1993. The Terrapins narrowly escaped the trembling Beaver Stadium with a one-point victory, last November. A battle of the defenses throughout, Maryland quarterback, C.J. Brown led his team to a 13-point comeback in the fourth quarter to stun the Lions.
#1: 70-7…’nuff said – Penn State 70 Maryland 7
1993
Going down as one of the biggest blowouts in college football history, the Nittany Lions embarrassed a Maryland team that seemed to forget they were playing a football game. The legendary Coach Joe Paterno would help guide the Lions to a 10-2 record in their final season before joining the Big Ten.
Not much of a football rivalry, as Penn State has dominated the meetings between the two with a 35-2-1 record. But let it be known, Saturday the Lions will look to get revenge for last season’s loss.
