Gay man allegedly beaten in North Burrowes assault

An alleged hate crime is being investigated by State College Police after tweet goes viral

The State College and University Police Departments are investigating an alleged homophobic assault in the early hours of October 4th.

News of the alleged attack broke after victim John Mateer tweeted:

Matt Weyl posted the following status with John’s photos which ended up getting over 1000 likes and over 70 shares.

The State College Police Department confirmed they are investigating the alleged assault, which is believed to have occurred near the 300 block of North Burrowes.

They also confirmed they had identified a suspect who is not a Penn State fraternity member, contrary to John’s initial tweet.

Initial reports suggest John is a Penn State student, though his Facebook and Twitter accounts say he is from New York City and attending Queens College.
