Obama’s Final Message to America

One week before Election Day, President Barack Obama returned to Ohio to speak at Capital University for a “Get Out the Early Vote” event in The Capital Center Field House

Pro-life protestors were in full force and I had to obtain maximum security clearance to enter the premises – they even confiscated my water bottle.

After hours of anticipation, a smorgasbord of Ohioans – from expectant mothers to African-Americans – eagerly welcomed The President back to Columbus. Behind the President’s podium, the slogan “Fired Up! Ready to Vote!” hung on a wall. In front of the banner were enthusiastic college students chanting “USA! USA!”

President Barack Obama began his speech by asking the energetic crowd what caffeinated beverages they had consumed before attending the event, “. . . Because [they] seem pretty fired up!” and “. . . Ready to go!” Peep: the slogan.

He proceeded, thanking Congresswoman, Joyce Beatty, for the outstanding introduction. Then he said, “Let me ask a sensitive question for a Chicagoan: How many Cleveland Indians fans in the house?” The crowd roared. He reassured the audience that they would be out of the auditorium before the first pitch. Aware that Francisco Lindor stole second base in game one of the World Series, he played on the Taco Bell promotion that everyone in America gets a free taco. At first glance, this may be seemingly unrelated to the election, however, President Obama said, “Now, there is a reason — the reason I’m bringing this up — if you can find time to get a free taco, then you can find the time to go vote.”

Although Election Day was still one week away, President Obama encouraged viewers to find their nearest early voting location, because, “Here, in Ohio, you can vote right now.” He advocated for Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton: “Make sure that the next President of the United States is Hillary Rodham Clinton. Work as hard for her as you worked for me.”

The incredible GOTV program has more than 63,000 volunteers all across the state that has registered tens of thousands of voters and called more than six million people. And thanks in part to their hard work, more than a million Ohioans have already cast their ballot.

President Obama referred to Election Week as the week “We will decide the future of this country that we love.”

He delved into a discussion on the auto industry, healthcare, education, foreign oil, clean energy, climate change, war, and civil rights. Over the course of these eight years, we have:

  • Battled back from what was almost a Great Depression. Incomes are rising again, and poverty is falling again.
  • Businesses have turned job losses into 15 million new jobs.
  • 20 million people have healthcare that didn’t have it before.
  • Autoworkers are back on the job producing the best cars in the world.
  • The uninsured rate has gone down. We are covering more than 90% of Americans for the first time in history.
  • We have kicked our addiction to foreign oil.
  • America is the leader in fight against climate change. We’ve doubled our production of clean energy.
  • We brought back men and women in uniform from Afghanistan and Iraq. And we pursued Osama bin Laden until he met justice.
  • Reinvigorated the cause of civil rights. We have become a country where a freedom that was limited to just a few is now a right guaranteed to everybody — the freedom to marry who you love.

President Obama continued, “And all of this happened because of you.”

He stated, “Donald Trump is uniquely unqualified to be President. He is temperamentally unfit to be commander-in-chief . . . There’s only one candidate in this race who has devoted her life to a better America — and that is the next President of the United States, Hillary Clinton.”
