Students come together on the Oval for Mental Health Awareness Week

Recess is the event that is bringing students fun and relaxation

If you have some free time today or just need a break from studying for your midterms, you should check out what Counseling and Consultation Services has set up on the South Oval.

With activities ranging from painting, cornhole, writing a “mental barrier” on a piece of breakable wood and chopping it in half, or grabbing a plate of trail mix, the event, called Recess, will be going on until 3pm today.

Harry Warren, a staff member at CCS, said that he loves that Recess brings so many organizations together on campus to get everyone involved in mental health awareness and ending the stigma. “The number one thing affecting students who come to us is anxiety – it used to be depression, but now the two conditions have flipped flop. In any case, it is really important for students to take a break and focus on their mental health.”

The Boo Radley Society, a club known for their random acts of kindness (like High Five Fridays!), loves the fact that Recess is spreading so much positivity to participants. A representative from Residential Life said that play is so underrated these days.

“We mostly get students in crisis and our job is to create homes for them, and taking the time to play is so important. This event isn’t just fun for the students, it’s fun for me too!”

There are free bubbles, too, with a tag that reads ‘You’ve got troubles? We’ve got bubbles’

So grab your Hall Pass – a card that you collect checks on once you complete activities that can be entered to win $50 on your BuckID – and get on down to Recess.
