We went to Comic Con and things got animated

‘Excuse me, how do I get to Comic Con?’
‘Just follow all the crazy shit’

Every fall the cosplayers of the world descend upon Manhattan like a tumorous horde, coloring the streets with their largely home-made costumes and props.

They’re the incongruous bits of your daily subway ride, the stranger-than-usual-looking pedestrians and the reason you know it’s Comic Con weekend.

Cosplayers assume different personalities and behaviors, draping themselves in the creative showers of the comic book world.

We went to Comic Con and asked a few people standing outside what they thought when they looked in the mirror that morning, post-transformations.

Caroline said: “I’ve been costuming since forever because my mum was a sewing teacher, so this is actually really sentimental for me.”

Abby said: “I saw a new person,” while Yubin said: “I like it! And it’s comfortable.”

Gamaliel said: “I need to lose weight.”

Cierra said: “I hate it.”

Xialen said: “A dream come true.”

Captain America said: “It’s a process, it’s more about what the suit looks like than I do. After that, the only thing I can mess up is my face.”

Lianna said: “When I started costuming I wore t-shirts and jeans, and now I’m making my own costumes,” and Sarah said: “I tried really really really really hard.”
