Her attacker threatened to light her on fire

Campus police have reported that Friday evening, a Michigan student was approached by a man who threatened to “set her on fire with a lighter” if she did not remove her hijab.

The woman did so and then fled the area, near East William and State St., and promptly called the police, who are now investigating.

The police department has issued a statement saying that the incident “includes elements of a bias-motivated crime,” and that they are investigating it as a hate crime.

Witnesses say the perpetrator was a white male, 20-30 years, old, appearing unkempt and intoxicated. Police are asking that anyone who may have witnessed the incident or may have additional information call them at (734)-794-6939.
