Former NYC mayor Bloomberg to deliver Michigan commencement address

The 2000 or so NY residents at UMich are pretty stoked

Michigan seniors have all anxiously awaited to hear who could possibly follow up the work of the 2015 commencement speakers Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw, co-founders of Zingerman’s, to deliver their graduation speech at the end of April. But finally, the University of Michigan has announced that former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg will deliver the 2016 commencement address at the Big House.

The CEO of Bloomberg L.P. — who has delivered commencement speeches for both Stanford University in 2013 and Harvard University in 2014 — has also been recommended to receive an honorary Doctorate of Laws by University President Mark Schlissel and the Honorary Degree Committee. The Michigan Board of Regents will vote Thursday on who will receive honorary degrees.

The other four recommendations include Michael Brown, City Year CEO and co-founder, who will deliver the UM-Dearborn commencement address and has also been recognized as a potential Doctorate of Laws honoree. Human geneticist and University of Washington professor Mary-Claire King will be honored with a Doctorate of Science at the Rackham Graduate School commencement address. Michele Oka Doner, Michigan alumna and profound artist, will receive a Doctorate of Arts. Clinical psychologist and former president of Spelman College Beverly Daniel Tatum will receive a Doctorate of Laws. Tatum is also a Michigan alumna.

The 108th mayor of New York City will follow the footsteps of many noble Michigan commencement speakers such as CEO of General Motors Mary Barra, CEO of Twitter Richard Costello, Co-Founder and President of Google Lawrence Page, and President Barack Obama.

The 2016 University of Michigan Commencement Address will occur on Saturday, April 30th at 10am.
