Times Square car crash victim Alyssa Elsman planned to attend Western Michigan University

The 18-year-old was from Portage, Michigan

Alyssa Elsman, an 18-year-old from Portage, Michigan, was killed in Times Square today after being struck by a drunk driver who sped through a crowd of pedestrians and onto the sidewalk.

Elsman graduated from Portage Central High School last June. According to her high school newspaper, she planned to attend Western Michigan University.

The incident left 22 more pedestrians injured, including Elsman’s younger sister.

The driver of the car, a 26-year-old Bronx man named Richard Rojas, reportedly has a history of DWI arrests. He attempted to flee on foot before police officers were able to arrest him.

Elsman’s younger sister was among those injured in the crash.
