Extreme weather conditions? Nah, just Michigan

We live in Michigan, what did you expect?

Winter weather is expected to return to Michigan with a vengeance starting today. Southeast Michigan will be under a winter storm watch beginning Wednesday, with 4-8 inches of snow possible for Wayne, Lenawee and Monroe counties and 7-11 inches possible north and west of those areas. A multi-faceted storm will deliver snow or a change from rain to snow and cause disruptions to travel and daily activities over part of the Midwestern United States during Wednesday and Thursday.

I took to Yik Yak trying to see if this snowstorm has anyone actually worried…

Gusty winds will accompany the rain and snow from the storm. The combination of wind and precipitation will result in poor visibility for motorists and will lead to airline delays. Wind gusts could be strong enough in some communities to cause sporadic power outages from the Midwest to the Atlantic Seaboard. Since the storm will track west of the Appalachians, the heaviest snow will develop in part of southeastern Missouri and will then expand over portions of Illinois, Indiana and the Lower Peninsula of Michigan.

Cities that are likely to be hit by 6 inches of snow or more and more substantial travel disruptions include Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Lansing, Flint and Bay City, Michigan. Enough snow to shovel and plow is likely in Detroit, even though the storm may start as rain or a wintry mix. “The snow can fall at the rate of 1-2 inches per hour in some communities during Wednesday evening,” according to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams. The heavy rate of snow and gusty winds can produce white-out conditions in some locations. The heaviest snow will fall from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. Travel late Wednesday evening will become treacherous. Travel Thursday morning will be the worst, given a wind-driven snow with gusts to 35 mph. Temperatures will be below freezing from Thursday into Friday, so no melting help from Mother Nature can be expected.

It’s simple, we’re in Michigan. One day it will be 60 and sunny and the next will be -10 with an expected 8 inches to be on the ground by 5. We have encountered far worst weather conditions; hell, we prep for catastrophic events to wake up and find half an inch on the ground. Weather in the United States consists of a variety of  assortments, what someone might encounter in Arizona is completely different than someone in Wisconsin. But here in the Great Lakes State, we could be a couple degrees below Arizona’s high to only then be slowly withering down to below zero. We live in a state where it’s common to have to switch on the heat and the air conditioning in the same day. Being in college we encounter the worst of the worst, having to wake up at 7 am to then walk across campus in -2 temperatures or be crammed into a shitty CATA Bus which of course we all know will be late to your stop. Regardless, we are prepared for the absolute worst; to wake up praying for a snow day is a thing of the past. Whatever we wake up to this week, we will be ready. #SpartansWill
