The Maryland primary is only a month away

I asked people who they are voting for

Nominations for each party which determine what two candidates you will be voting on for the Democratic Party and the Republican Party will be made on different dates. The conventions for each party will be held during the week of July 25th for Democrats and the week of July 1st for Republicans.

During these conventions, delegates of the party will choose the nominee by majority vote. Many believe Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee and Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee because they have won the most primaries thus far.

“I have no idea how Trump has so many delegates,” said University of Maryland sophomore, Andy Schell. “I’m just hoping for a brokered convention.”

A brokered convention means an election in which no candidate has secured a majority of votes or delegates.

“In my opinion, I don’t think there are truly any candidates I would vote for,” said student Julie Larsen.

Maryland has a closed election for the primary and general elections. This means only registered party members can vote and they can only vote for candidates in their party if they have declared what party they are voting for.

With so many candidates who are running for president in the Republican party, the amount of choices you have for this election can seem a bit unsettling. If you are unsure of who to vote for by now, be sure to research each candidate on what they stand for and what they will do as president before you decide what you agree with and with whom.

“I think this election is a lot different from past elections because both Democrats and Republicans are pushing for more extreme agendas,” said sophomore Jack Payne. “I think it is awesome that a lot more people, especially young adults, are voting this election.”

This is a very exciting election for America’s youth. Many more young adults are voting in this election, including boys and girls in colleges, because they now surpass the minimum of being 18 years of age or older to vote. Although everyone has different candidate preferences, it is very exciting that these young adults are playing more of a role into how our country will be run for the next four years.

Andy is rooting for John Kasich of the Republican Party. “He’s the only middle ground candidate. He’s the only Republican candidate who is a veteran to job creation, to tax cuts, budget planning, etc. He also performs the best against Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee. He will achieve more crossover votes than the other staunchly right wing candidates. He has private sector experience, two terms as Ohio governor, congressional experience and is pro-life. He wants to oppose the Iran deal started by Obama. He, generally speaking, is the most veteran, reasonable, respectful and viable man to be placed in the Oval Office.”

Like these students, it is very important that you go out and vote. For the upcoming presidential election this year, there is much confusion on when the primaries are being held. The Maryland primaries will be held on April 26th, 2016. The deadline to file your status to vote in the election for the two major parties is on April 5th. You must register to vote by October 18th for the major presidential election after the primaries. It’s important to register and go out and vote for your favorite candidate when you can.
