Everything you missed at the Canaan Smith concert

Like opener Cody Purvis admitting to being arrested at St. Patty’s Day at JMU

Canaan Smith performed live in Wilson Auditorium on the night of Friday, September 16th with opener Cody Purvis.

JMU students, along with members of the Harrisonburg community, were seen lining up in front of Wilson nearly an hour before the show started.  The concert-goers were enthusiastic and excited to see this live country performance as they decked out in their cowboy boots, flannels and denim.

Did we just become a southern school or did we just become a southern school?

The concert kicked off with Cody Purvis, singing “Lovin’ on you.”  Purvis loved the college crowd and made the point that this was definitely not his first time at JMU, saying “I used to come to JMU to party when I was in college, in fact I was arrested on St. Patty’s Day here one year!”

Cody Purvis being relatable outside the classroom setting

Purvis played some of his most popular songs, including “Little Bit Country” and “Another Love Song.”  He got the whole crowd excited and enthusiastic early in the show, with girls screaming and crazed fans singing along.  Purvis even took the time to ask the crowd, “Is there any sorority girls out there tonight?”

Right here for you, Cody!

After Purvis closed, he left the crowd eager and ready for Canaan Smith, so, in the meantime I asked a few excited JMU fans to describe Canaan Smith in 1 word:

“I would describe him as energetic, or country!”- JMU Senior

“I have a fiancé downstairs so I don’t want to say hot, but hot.”-JMU Senior

Kicking off his performance with his hit, “Hole in a Bottle,” when Canaan Smith finally arrived on stage, I was pleasantly surprised to see that these girls’ descriptions were strangely accurate.

Energetic and country and hot, oh my!

Similar to Purvis, Smith did not fail to mention that this wasn’t his first time at JMU either, and that he came during his youth for many festivities.  Nevertheless the crowd was ecstatic for Smith as he personalized his songs by replacing lyrics with things like, “JMU likes to party.”  Canaan Smith played many of his most recent popular hits including personal favorites, “Love You Like That” and “Two Lane Road.” Throughout the concert he expressed how much he loved playing this show, and how great it was to be back in Virginia, being born in this great state himself!

By the end of the concert, the JMU community was begging for more!  Canaan Smith and Cody Purvis put on an incredible show that highlighted the country pride that lies over here in the happiest place on earth.

A successful country concert at JMU?

Ain’t that the truth!
