The weirdest classes you can take at JMU

Ballroom dancing, anyone?

One of the most stressful times of the year is coming upon us, where tears are shed and last resorts are used. That’s right, it’s enrollment time. It’s nearly impossible to get the exact schedule you have meticulously put together, so often times you pretty much have to go with what’s open and hope for the best.

If you have a free space and are in search of another class, check out some of these random electives to spice up your schedule.

DANC 143, International Folk Dance

This class introduces students to dance styles from around the globe, with an emphasis on eastern and western Europe, Mexico and Israel. So if you’re looking to widen your horizon a little or try to engage with another culture on a totally new level, this is the class for you!

DANC 144, Ballroom Dance

Do you ever find yourself at a fancy ball in a far away castle, but are embarrassed at your inadequate skills when the prince asks you to dance? Happens to me all the time, so its a good thing we have a class that teaches the basics of ballroom dance so you won’t have to face that predicament again.

KIN 133, Bowling

This is a class where you literally show up, go bowling and go home. Need I say more?

KIN 148, Jogging

For those of you who have never experienced jogging in any sense, JMU has a class for you. In this course you will learn the basics of jogging, yes, simply a slower form of running. If you want a filler elective that won’t add any stress to your schedule full of difficult major classes, this would be the perfect fit.

KIN 156, Scuba and Skin Diving

This isn’t your average P.E. class, folks. In taking this course you can actually get your scuba-diving certification and be able to explore the ocean whenever you want. This is a super cool way to make your summer beach vacations great and experience the ocean in amazing ways.

KIN 128, Fencing

Master the artful skill of fencing in this awesome class for a fun elective. Blow off some steam by challenging your peer to an intense battle to the death (or maybe just until the match is won, either way).

KIN 129, Badminton

If you’ve started to notice a trend here you’ve got it right, KIN classes are some of the most diverse and random courses at JMU. It’s time to step up your game in this KIN class and learn how to play badminton like a pro.  If your family plays this game every summer, you might as well be good at it and show off a few of your skills, right?

MUS 204, History of Rock

Rock is a style that changed the way Americans experience music forever. This interesting class is perfect for anyone who wants to learn about something different than the same old gen-eds and boring electives. Hear about the genre that has extended across the decades, developing into music that we could not imagine the world without today.

ISCI 104: Scientific Perspectives: Fly Fishing & The Environment

The great thing about this elective is that it counts as a lab science. Don’t want to take an insanely hard chemistry class with the lab? Take fly fishing instead, where you’ll get to have an adventurous hands on experience every class that’s sure to keep you interested throughout the semester.

Your parents will be so happy that this is what their money is going towards!
