We asked out-of-state students why they chose JMU

In case you didn’t already know JMU is the greatest school ever, here’s more proof

Do you ever wonder how people hear about JMU or why they chose it as their college, especially non-Virginia residents? Each student has different reasons and a unique story. This week I interviewed fellow out-of-state students on why they chose JMU and here were the results:

Kelly Bruner, Ellicott City, MD

“I personally chose JMU because I wanted to explore somewhere outside of Maryland where I didn’t know many people. I also love the outdoors and going on adventures, which JMU is great for. My attractive tour guide also may or may not have influenced my choice.”

Kevin Braun, Philadelphia, PA

“When I visited JMU, it had that cliché college feel that is portrayed in all the movies and TV shows. I felt like this is how college should be and it just didn’t compare to anywhere else I visited.”

Katie Mannarino, Greenwich, CT

“I always wanted to go to a more southern school, but not too southern. One of my favorite high school teachers (shout-out to Mr. Healy) went to JMU and recommended I should check it out. So I researched online and it seemed like the perfect distance and exactly what I wanted. I fell in love when I visited and immediately made it my home!”

Cynthia Sellar, Greenville, DE

“When I toured JMU over the summer, everyone was just SO happy and I wanted to experience that happiness. I also met a super cool girl named Kelly Bruner and I immediately knew I wanted to room with her. We have been the best of friends ever since!”

Leanna Governale, Martinsville, NJ

“New Jersey schools suck. Lol, just kidding. They’re great, I just felt like I would be stuck in high school going to a school in NJ and I wanted to explore somewhere new. JMU was the perfect distance away and it is so freaking pretty, how could you not want to come here?”

Zach Reese, West Hartford, CT

“I came to JMU for many reasons. One is out-of-state tuition is about the same as in-state in Connecticut. Another is I really love Washington, D.C. and felt that coming to a school closer to D.C. would set me up with a lot more opportunities than being farther away up north. The Business School here is ranked within the top 40 in the nation which is nice and it’s a lot warmer here than in CT.  Everyone at JMU is so friendly and I have never heard a negative comment about JMU. Last but not least, we are known for having attractive students” (*fact*).

Emily Herring, Sykesville, MD

“Literally everyone here is so nice. The professors, the lunch ladies, the students, even the campus police. Also people hold the door for you!!! You can’t find that anywhere else besides JMU.”

Jacqueline Cardi, South Salem, NY

“I’m going to be honest…I never actually visited JMU’s campus and it was my last choice, but I fell in love once I got here. There’s so much energy, so many organizations and clubs to get involved with, the food is great, professor’s are super helpful, and there’s always something to do! I couldn’t be happier with the way things turned out.”

Taylor Lynn, Canton, CT

“I chose JMU because I wanted to branch out and meet all different types of people. Coming in, I didn’t know a single soul, but I found everyone is so outgoing and it is so easy to make friends. I couldn’t have found better friends and I continue to make new ones everyday!”

Tommy Jarosz, Elkridge, MD

“I chose JMU because one of my friends recommended that I visit so I did and instantly fell in love. The atmosphere here is so friendly and relaxed.”
